Pune Warriors – a tough time for the coaches

The management of Pune Warriors was taking a chance by entrusting Saurav Ganguly the leadership of the team. Though the team consists of many players from India and abroad who have proved their worth in T20 matches captain Ganguly is yet to get adapted to the 20 overs match. Players including Rahul Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Ashok Dinda, Angelo Mathews, Wayne Parnell, Graeme Smith and Jesse Ryder are T20 players of proven talent. Though the captain is a stalwart of international cricket he has little achievements in T20. The Australian cricketer Michael Clarke will be joining the team in the second half of the tournament after his West Indies tour. Michael can provide a good leadership to the team. Till then the bowling coach Allan Donald and batting coach Praveen Amre along with captain Ganguly have to identify the players who are in their best form and ensure optimum use of their skills. Mental conditioning coach of the team Paddy Upton will also assist Donald and Amre in ensuring proper utilization of the talent.

The heavy task in front of these coaches is proper utilization of player resources so as to enable the team to gain momentum in a collective way. Moreover, the team has a long list of players to choose and there is brisk competition among the players for places in different departments. Selection of openers among Ganguly, Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Mohnish Mishra, Dheeraj Jadhav, Tamim Iqbal of Bangladesh, Graeme Smith and Luke Wright is the task for Amre. In these aspects of leadership, Saurav Ganguly has a lot to pick up.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – aiming high

Royal Challengers Bangalore is determined to lift the IPL trophy this time. In the last season, they reached up to the finals and lost to Chennai Super Kings whereas in the T20 Championship trophy also they lost the finals against Mumbai Indians. The team has decided to repeat their impressive performance and improve upon their consistency. This time also the team has no lack of inputs. The team includes stunning batsmen like Tilakaratne Dilshan, A B De Villiers and Virat Kohli and legendary bowlers like Daniel Vettori, Dirk Nannes, Zaheer Khan and the unassailable Muthiah Muralitharan. This time RCB will not be depending much on the West Indies batsman Chris Gayle who was in his best form in the Bangla Desh Premier League. Virat Kohli also was in a tremendous form both in Asia Cup and the tour Down Under.

A B De Villiers can score runs in any kind of situations and he is known for his shots at will. Dilshan-Gayle partnership will be a severe challenge for the opposing team. Zaheer Khan and Nannes will make it miserable for the batsmen of the opposing team. The Indian players Cheteshwar Pujara and Saurabh Tiwary also will lend strong support to the team. The cool headed captain Vettori can also contribute as a batsman down in the order. The credit for the team reaching the finals in the last season goes exclusively to Chris Gayle and this time they should not depend on him to that extent. Moreover, RCB has to improve a lot on its bowling. Anil Kumble as mentor of the team has succeeded in making it a disciplined team. The team also includes Andrew McDonald, Luke Pomersbach, Rilee Rossouw, Mayank Agarwal, Arun Karthik, K P Appanna and Sreenath Aravind.

Acquisitions by Pune Warrior

Pune Warriors could not participate in the IPL auction-2012 at Bangalore on Feb.4, 2012 as their participation in IPL season V was quite uncertain at that time. However, things were settled subsequently and their participation was confirmed by BCCI. Now, the team management is in the process of formation of a strong team consisting of national as well as international cricketers under the leadership of former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly.

Former Australian captain Michael Clark has been made a member of this team. Ironically, Clark has never participated so far in IPL and for this year also he was not included in the list of Australian players for auction. However, BCCI has given permission to Pune Warriors to acquire players who were out of the auction list. In fact, Clark has already retired from International T20 cricket and his priority is for test matches. He is expected to make a surprise in IPL – V. Captain Saurav Ganguly informed that Clark will be available only during the month of May soon after the completion of Australia’s West Indies tour. In case Clark accepts the assignment, he will be offered one month contract in IPL 2012 from May 1.

The Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright has sacrificed about half a dozen English county championship matches in order to play for Pune Warriors in IPL 2012. According to Luke, though he is unhappy about missing the county matches he is happy also about playing in IPL. West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels and the Australian cricketers Steven Smith and James Hopes have already signed with Pune Warriors. Thus Pune Warriors have filled all their seats for international players.

Mahesh Rawat of Indian Railways will be playing for Pune Warriors in this season. Rawat was with Rajasthan Royals in the first IPL tournament. His performance was noteworthy in the Ranji Trophy this year and in the match held at Nagpur, he got 7 catches against Madhya Pradesh which was a National record.

The former IPL champions Deccan Chargers identified Sudhindra as an ideal player for their team and signed him for IPL – V as an uncapped player.
